How to reset AirPods & AirPods Pro
The Easy Reset Process
For this process, we don’t even need an iPhone or Mac. We need the AirPods themselves with a little bit of battery. If your AirPods are entirely dead, ensure you charge them for a few minutes.

Once they’re charged, the resetting process is straightforward:
- Open the AirPods case lid.
- Flip to the back and locate the pairing/reset button.
- Press and hold the button for about 15 seconds.
Keep an eye on the status light on the front of the case:
- It will first flash white.
- Continue holding until it flashes amber.
As soon as the light flashes amber, release the button. Your AirPods are now factory reset.
Unpairing AirPods Before Reset
Before resetting, ensure your AirPods are unpaired from your devices:
- Go to Bluetooth settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your AirPods and select “Forget This Device.”
- Confirm to remove the AirPods from all devices connected to your iCloud account.
Now, your AirPods are ready for a reset.
Factory Reset Process
- Keep your AirPods in their case with the lid closed.
- Open the lid and follow these steps:
- If you have AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, double-tap the front of the case. A chime might play, and the status light will flash white.
- Double-tap the front again. The light will continue flashing white.
- Double-tap the front a third time. The light will flash amber and then white.
For all other AirPods models:
- Open the lid on your AirPods case.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds until the status light flashes amber and then white.
Your AirPods are now reset and ready to pair with your device.
How to Reset AirPods Max

For AirPods Max, the process is slightly different:
- Remove them from the case.
- Make sure they are charged for a few minutes before starting.
- Unpair your AirPods Max by going to Settings or Bluetooth settings on your iPhone. Tap your AirPods Max, then “Forget This Device,” and confirm.
Once unpaired:
- Press the Noise Control button and the Digital Crown for about 15 seconds.
- Watch the LED near the bottom of the right earphone.
The light will flash amber and then white, indicating the reset is complete.
Additional Tips for Charging and Battery Issues
If you’re experiencing battery or charging issues, here are some tips:
- Check your charging cable. Avoid using counterfeit or damaged cables, which can cause problems like different battery percentages on each AirPod.
- Always prefer the original cable with your AirPods or a genuine Apple cable.
It might be a hardware issue if resetting and checking the cable doesn’t resolve the problem. In that case, contact Apple Support for further assistance.
